Environmental Assessment (EA)

Action Outcome:
Issuance of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI)

Description:

Caltrans, District 10 proposes the following project:

The Stockton Channel VIaduct Bridge Rehab project would rehabilitate the northbound and the southbound bridges on I-5 that span the Stockton Channel. The bridges are approximately 2725’ in length. The existing deck will be replaced, and the existing superstructure elements will be strengthened to meet current AASHTO LRFD standards. The existing bridge railings will also be upgraded to meet the latest FHWA safety standards. The existing substructure will be evaluated and rehabilitated to meet current AASHTO LRFD standards. Additionally, the existing piers will be analyzed for scour, and scour counter measures will be utilized as required. The bridge piers that are located within navigational waters will also be protected from impact by sea vessels by use of fender systems as required. This project will require traffic handling as I-5 is a major corridor for goods and services movement. The environmental aspects due to the work in the waterway, as well as any right of way impacts will be addressed. Coordination with multiple partners and stakeholders will be required, as well as utility coordination. There will also be coordination with the US Coast Guard as the project is located within navigational waters. This project also entails the construction of a new standalone structure which will function as an offramp to Pershing Avenue. This new structure will connect I-5 Northbound in the vicinity of SR 4 to the northbound Pershing Avenue, it will widen the I-5 Norhtbound, and span the Stockton Channel.
