Project Purpose

NANA Regional Corporation, Inc. (NANA) has secured funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), to implement a high-speed broadband network in the NANA region under the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP). The NANA Region Broadband Project stands as one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the region, aiming to provide affordable and reliable high-speed broadband access to over 7,000 individuals currently unserved by NTIA/FCC standards.

The primary objective is to install a future-proof, fiber-based broadband network capable of bridging the digital divide and providing high-speed internet services to eight unserved Alaska Native Villages. This project will improve access to education, healthcare, government services, and economic opportunities, while also enhancing public safety through improved communication infrastructure.

Project Description

The proposed ~725-mile fiber optic cable route will consist of terrestrial ground-laid, subsea, trenched, and aerial cable to connect 10 villages to the broadband Point of Presence (PoP) in Kotzebue. Key materials include fiber optic cable (FOC), vaults, hardened splice cases, poles for crossings, and network equipment at each village. The installation will primarily consist of ground-laid cable expected to self-bury over time.

Technical and Financial Ability

NANA manages a portfolio of companies with annual revenues of $1.8B and 10,000 employees, providing services in telecommunications, IT, construction, and more. These companies have completed numerous telecommunication projects, including submarine fiber optic cables, microwave radio relay networks, and satellite ground stations.

NANA’s teams include licensed professional engineers, telecommunications experts, construction professionals, and more, all equipped to handle the demands of this project.
