Description:

This proposed project would upgrade the existing urban section of US 59 between International Blvd. and 0.75 miles south of Jacaman Rd to interstate standards for the future I-69W.  The northern project limits for this proposed project would be the intersection of US 59 and International Blvd.  The southern project limits would be approximately 0.12 miles south the intersection of US 59 and East Corridor Rd. (aka Airport Rd.).  Although this proposed interstate section of roadway would terminate at 0.75 miles south of Jacaman Rd., the southern project limits would extend approximately 0.52 miles further south to transition the proposed roadway typical section back into the existing roadway typical section, and to construct a required storm water detention pond.  This project is approximately 5.9 miles long.  Currently within these project limits US 59 consist of a six-lane urban roadway that is divided by a raised median.  The existing roadway right of way (ROW) is approximately 150-ft. in width.

This proposed project would include widening the existing roadway to include six main lanes, with one way three lane frontage roads on both sides of the main lanes.  New overpasses would be constructed at the intersections of US 59/Shiloh Blvd., US 59/Del Mar Blvd., US 59/University Blvd., and US 59/Jacaman Rd.  See the uploaded file (Exhibit A: Project Location Map.pdf) in Documents/Projects for the locations of these proposed overpasses.  The ROW for this new interstate facility would be widened to approximately 400-ft. with acquisition occurring on both sides of the existing US 59 ROW.   Additional areas adjacent to this proposed ROW will be acquired to accommodate the proposed storm water detention ponds that will be needed for this project.  The location of these storm water detention ponds would be located outside the proposed 400-ft. wide roadway ROW.

Altogether this proposed project would include approximately 123 acres of existing US 59 ROW and require approximately 200 acres of new ROW for a total of 323 acres for the Project Area.  However, since this project is still in the schematic phase and it is possible for the proposed ROW to be adjusted during the project design phase, the project area was buffered by approximately 50-ft. to accommodate any minor changes in the proposed ROW for a Project Study Area (PSA) of 398 acres. All environmental studies pertaining to natural resources were based upon the PSA.
