Description:

The proposed project looks to rehabilitate or replace bridge no. 01349 (William F. Cribari Memorial Bridge, also known as Saguatuck Swing Bridge) which carries Route 136 over the Saugatuck River in the town of Westport, Connecticut. CTDOT released a Bridge Rehabilitation Study Report in June 2016. This planning-level study recommends that the bridge either undergo major rehabilitation or replacement due to the critical condition of the bridge's trusses. The trusses are in place for ornamental purposes only and carry no live load. Even so, failure to a primary truss member, if not properly maintained, could risk truss collapse and pose a safety hazard to vehicles and pedestrians.
There is considerable public interest and concern with the project. Many members of the pubic value the existing
bridge's historic protections (bridge truss is listed on the NRHP), and there is concern that a rehab or replacement of the bridge would raise the vertical clearance and allow for semi-trailer trucks to cross, which is currently prohibited due to the low bridge height. Many members of the community prefer that truck traffic is minimal due to the vertical clearance restrictions.  FHWA/CTDOT intend to proceed with an Environmental Assessment, largely due to the high level of public controversy over Section 106 impacts. Alternatives developed through project scoping as of 5/2019 have estimated construction costs ranging from ~20-43 million.  Estimated total cost entered above is intend as an order of magnitude estimate based on this information.
